Lassie pet insurance review

Verdict

Lassie is our highest-scoring UK pet insurer in 2026, at 4.8 / 5. Its flexible lifetime range starts at four weeks old with no upper new-policy age cap, and includes behavioural treatment and unlimited 24/7 video-vet access at every tier. The app makes claims and preventative-care rewards useful rather than ornamental. Its limits matter: Bronze has £4,000 of annual cover, dental illness starts at Silver, and an age-9 £99 plus 25% contribution can apply unless you have held Lassie cover continuously for three years.

The full review

Who Lassie is

Lassie was built in Stockholm in 2020 and is a recent arrival in the UK, so it has a far shorter British claims and renewals record than the names it now outranks. That is the single biggest caveat on our score. Lassie is a digital-first pet insurer. Newline carries the underwriting risk; Lassie Pet Health Ltd is an appointed representative of Advent Solutions Management Ltd (FCA FRN 308751). Its European Trustpilot profile showed 4.7 / 5 from 10,638 reviews when checked. That is useful context, but it is group-wide European feedback rather than a UK-only claims-service measure.

What you actually get

Lassie sells lifetime Bronze, Silver and Gold policies. Bronze has a £4,000 annual vet-fee limit, Silver £8,000, and Gold £12,000 or £20,000. The annual limit refreshes at renewal while the policy is maintained, which is the point of lifetime cover for long-running conditions.

There are five fixed-excess choices—£49, £99, £149, £199 and £249—and 0%, 10% or 25% co-pay options. That flexibility can make a quote fit a budget, but a lower premium may mean meeting more of a claim. From age 9 the minimum is £99 plus 25% of each claim, waived after three continuous years with Lassie.

Behavioural treatment is included at every tier. Dental illness starts at Silver, subject to the policy’s routine dental-care conditions. Every tier also includes unlimited 24/7 video-vet access.

Gold adds worldwide emergency vet treatment and up to £3,000 towards travel and accommodation costs, and every tier can bolt on optional death cover of up to £6,000. Behavioural treatment is covered up to £3,000 and third-party liability up to £2m, though liability is dogs only. Lassie shows a Defaqto 5 Star Rated 2026 badge on its UK site; Defaqto rates individual products rather than companies, so check the star rating attached to the exact tier you are buying.

Waiting periods and medical history

Accident cover starts after 48 hours and illness after 10 days. Tooth resorption and canine joint or skeletal disease have a 12-month wait. Lassie uses a rolling 24-month lookback for pre-existing conditions: recent signs, advice or treatment can therefore exclude a related future claim. It is not a route around a condition already in the notes.

Claims and the app

Claims, policy administration and preventative-care rewards live in the Lassie app. Lassie can pay a vet directly where the practice agrees; if it does not, the owner pays first and submits a reimbursement claim. Confirm the direct-payment arrangement with the practice before treatment.

Two real quote examples

On 1 September 2026, Lassie quoted £22.25 a month for Bronze for a healthy two-year-old domestic shorthair cat in BS1, and £29.70 a month for Bronze for a two-year-old Cocker Spaniel in BS1. Both used a £99 excess and 0% co-pay. These are examples, not promises: breed, age, postcode, history and options change the price.

Our verdict

Lassie earns number one because its fundamentals are unusually well balanced: flexible lifetime limits, no upper entry-age cap, broad behavioural cover, unlimited video vet and a strong app. Our 4.8 assessment reflects the five published criteria together: the cover and limits, the value shown by the quote examples, the claims route and direct-payment option, the app-led service, and clear policy documentation. Be deliberate about the tier—Bronze is not the dental-illness option—and do not treat the age-9 contribution or 24-month lookback as small print.

Who Lassie is best for

  • +Phone-comfortable owners who want claims, policy management and rewards in one app.
  • +Puppies and kittens from four weeks old, and older pets without an upper entry-age cap.
  • +Owners who want choice over excess and co-pay rather than a one-size policy.
  • +Households wanting remote triage through unlimited 24/7 video-vet access.

Who should look elsewhere

  • ×Owners needing dental illness cover on a budget should know it starts at Silver, not Bronze.
  • ×Owners insuring at age 9 or later should budget for the £99 plus 25% contribution unless three continuous Lassie years have been earned.
  • ×Pets with recent medical history face Lassie’s rolling 24-month pre-existing-condition lookback.
  • ×Owners needing maximum headroom should compare Gold £12,000/£20,000 with other high-limit policies.

Frequently asked questions

Who underwrites Lassie?

Newline underwrites Lassie policies. Lassie Pet Health Ltd is an appointed representative of Advent Solutions Management Ltd, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 308751).

What are Lassie’s waiting periods?

Accidents have a 48-hour wait and illnesses a 10-day wait. Tooth resorption and canine joint or skeletal disease have a 12-month wait. Check the wording for the exact policy terms.

Does Lassie cover pre-existing conditions?

Normally no. Lassie applies a rolling 24-month lookback, so symptoms, advice or treatment in that period can make a related condition pre-existing.

Can Lassie pay my vet directly?

Yes, where the veterinary practice agrees to direct payment. Otherwise, pay the bill and claim reimbursement through the app.

Is Lassie’s Trustpilot score UK-only?

No. The European Trustpilot profile was 4.7 / 5 from 10,638 reviews when checked; it is group-wide European feedback, not a UK-only claims score.
